Do I need to book in advance or announce my visit?
Note! In corona time, yes. (Usually not required. You can come to Elka without prior notice on weekdays from 8:30 to 15:30. Deviating opening hours will be announced on Elka’s website. More than 95% of the materials are freely available to customers. If it is suspected that the use of documents is restricted, it is advisable to check the matter in advance by email e-posti(at)elka.fi.)
Does a scientific study or other official matter have to be done in order to see documents, drawings or photographs?
No need for so-called official reason. The customer can even come to see photos of their hometown or look for information about the grandfather who worked at the sawmill. Note! Most of our material is in Finnish!
Is it possible to loan documents or books?
As a rule, documents and books are loaned only to National Archives offices.
Are interlibrary loans chargeable?
Delivery costs are charged for interlibrary loans in accordance with the price list.
Can anyone come visit Elka?
Yes you can. Elka has no prior requirements regarding its customers or business reasons.
I am a long distance traveler from Helsinki, can I work longer than 15.30?
We will try to arrange extra time if necessary. It is a good idea to ask about this in advance.
